The Steps to an El Salvador AdoptionThe adoption process from El Salvador can appear overwhelming initially. However, it is a step-by-step process that is not all that difficult to accomplish. The Home StudyThe first step in adopting from El Salvador is to have a home study conducted by an agency licensed in your state of residence. The home study agency you choose should be familiar with International adoptions. Kentucky Adoption Services, Inc. will contact the agency that you have chosen to give them the specifics on what the home study should include and the number of pages that are recommended. KAS can provide home studies for Kentucky residents. Immigration and Naturalization PaperworkThe second step, that can be done after the homestudy, is to file your Immigration and Naturalization Paperwork: the I-800A. Kentucky Adoption Services or your home study agency can tell you how to fill this out. It is important that one of these two entities be either with you in person while you are filling it out or be on the phone with you. The DossierThe next step is to prepare your Dossier. The Dossier is a compilation of documents that require various seals at different levels of government. These documents will be notarized (or certified from an appropriate state court or agency), certified by a county court (if required in your particular state) and appostilled by the Secretary of State where the document originated. KAS, Inc. will provide adopting families with exact directions about how to prepare their dossier and an up-to-date Dossier document list when they have chosen to adopt from El Salvador. Don't be overwhelmed - we'll help you with this and KAS Inc. can even manage dossier preparation and domestic and international mailing for a nominal fee! Families should begin collecting these documents early in the adoption process so that when the 171-H arrives they are ready to submit to the appropriate entities for seals. Once your dossier is properly appostilled and ready to submit, your documents will be reviewed again and your family will be presented to an adoption board in El Salvador for their review. They may request additional documents or ask that a document be redone. It is expected that this approval process will take approximately 10 months.
The Referral
The wait time for a referral from El Salvador varies based upon the age of child a family is requesting. Families are not permitted to request a specific gender. We can provide tentative referrals but families must be approved by the Central Authority of El Salvador and the match must be approved. The time frame for actual adoption completion will likely range from 18 months to 24 months based upon the individual situation of the child being adopted with private relinquishment adoptions of younger children possibly less time consuming.
Referral information includes as much detail as we receive from our overseas counterparts, including a photograph with medical and social history. In addition, periodic updates will be available to adopting parents during the adoption process provided that we are able to get updated information.
TravelTravel is required of both parents for approximately two - three weeks, although two short trips may be a possibility with approximately two weeks between them. |
