Haitian Adoption ProcessThe adoption process from Haiti can appear overwhelming initially. However, your KAS dossier preparer will guide you through each step. The Steps to a Haitian AdoptionThe first step in adopting from Haiti is to have a home study conducted by an agency licensed in your state of residence. The home study agency you choose should be familiar with International adoptions. Kentucky Adoption Services, Inc. will contact the agency that you have chosen to give them the specifics on what the home study should include - the home study must be signed by a Masters Level Clinician. KAS can provide home studies for Kentucky residents. The next step is to prepare your Dossier. The Dossier is a compilation of documents that require various seals at different levels of government. These documents will be notarized, (or certified from an appropriate state court or agency), authenticated (by the Secretary of State from the state the document originated), translated into French, and legalized (by the Haitian Consulate). KAS, Inc. will assist you in collecting your original notarized documents, and will authenticate, translate and legalize your dossier for you. At the same time, you can file your Immigration and Naturalization Paperwork: the I-600A. Kentucky Adoption Services will assist you throughout the US Immigrations process with instructions and samples. The second page of the I-600A can be confusing and it is important that it be filled out correctly. Your ReferralChildren from infants to age twelve are waiting for their forever families. Individual children, twins, and sibling groups are available. BRESMA is filled to capacity and must turn away children every week. Once a family’s dossier is complete, the wait for a referral is generally very short depending upon the age and gender of child requested. Referral information includes a basic social history, laboratory test results, photographs, and first hand information about from our program coordinator. KAS will provide updated information about your child and your case status throughout the adoption process. The process of adoption takes on average 12-24 months from the time your dossier arrives in Haiti and you accept the referral of a child.
TravelParents will be required to travel to Haiti to meet their child and sign a statement of adoption agreement in court in Port-au-Prince. Additional travel is encouraged in the child’s best interest. KAS will assist in making travel arrangements. Our families usually travel in groups and enjoy their time together with their children. |
